This is the product vision for Gitter. The Gitter is an open source instant messaging application for developers, and is the place to connect the open source and software development community.
Please read through to understand where we're headed and feel free to jump right into the discussion by commenting on one of the epics or issues, or by reaching out directly to our product manager leading this area: James Ramsay (E-Mail | Twitter)
Gitter is a popular tool for building open source communities and is well integrated with GitHub. Since GitLab acquired Gitter has open sourced it's web app, iOS app and Android app.
Make Gitter.im first-class GitLab.com
Gitter.im has first-class integrations with GitHub.com, the most popular place to host open source Git repositories. GitLab.com is increasingly popular for open source projects and should have first class support.
Make Gitter modern
Instant messaging tools like Slack have made threaded conversations and emoji reactions commonplace. Features like these are also part of asynchronous communication like GitLab issues. We need to make sure that Gitter is current and modern.
We follow the same prioritization guidelines as the product team at large. The public backlog for Gitter can be viewed here, and can be filtered by labels or milestones. If you find something you are interested in, you're encouraged to jump into the conversation and participate. At GitLab, everyone can contribute!
