The key change is that *Free* is not limited to CE: the Enterprise Edition (EE) package can also run with Free features. What differs most for self-managed users is the path to paid features.","## CE vs EE: what should I choose?\n\nGitLab offers Free, Premium, and Ultimate tiers. The EE package can run with Free features without a paid subscription. If you later purchase a subscription, you can activate EE with an activation code to unlock the features in that tier.
